The ability triggers whether the lost health was due to damage or from an effect that causes health loss such as spending it for an ability.
The ability triggers from any Hero other than Briar losing health, even allied Heroes.
The ability triggers on each instance of health loss, not for the total amount lost. For example, if a Hero were to lose 1H, then 2H, and finally 4H, Briar would get +3H.
If multiple Heroes lose health at the same time, Briar gets +1H for each Hero that lost health.
